Luxembourg City, Luxembourg

Destination: Luxembourg City
Dates: March 2023
Nights: 3 Nights
Accommodation: Hotel Grey
Highlights: Free transportation, Vianden castle, Old Town and Questo game.
Lowlights: Gare area at night time, Hotel breakfast

New year, new city! Luxembourg was our first city break of 2023. Our stay was at Hotel Grey, which is opposite Luxembourg train station and a 20 minute walk to the city centre. Apart from the terrible breakfast, our room was clean and modern fitted with a glass between the bedroom and shower, so if watching your roommates shower is your thing. Sadly, none of us were shy! The extra touches of slippers, toothbrush, cotton pads and the free gym (located outside) made the stay a lot more comfortable!

Free Transportation

You heard right! All buses, trams and trains are free. Getting from the airport to our hotel was an easy mission. We came out of the airport, confirmed with the driver we didn’t have to pay (so British of us) jumped on the 29 bus and 20 mins later we arrived at Luxembourg Gare Central Train Station. All transportations were clean and on time considering it was free.

Luxembourg Card

The Luxembourg Card entitles you to free or discounted admission to more than 90 places of interest. This is applicable for the whole of Luxembourg not just the city. We decided not to get one as it’s probably best to purchase in the summer when things are open longer.

Vianden Castle

We ventured beyond the city to explore Vianden Castle. It was a nice sunny day and why not take advantage of seeing what other parts of Luxembourg look like with free transport

How to get there

Vianden Castle was an hour away from we were staying. Luckily, having the train station a stone throw away made our trip easier. We caught the fastest train IC (3 stops, 29 mins) to Ettelbruck Gare, once you come out of the station turn right and catch the fastest bus 181 (22 stops, 26 mins) towards Obereisenbach, Bei der Baachand, get off at Vianden Breck stop. From here you will have to walk 13 mins up to the castle, but its a lovely scenic walk through the beautiful town. We went in early March so nothing was opened apart from the Castle and a few cafes. Bring snacks!

Vianden castle is one of the largest and most beautiful feudal residences of the romanesque and gothic periods in Europe. The work done by archaeologists, historians and preservationists to restore this castle is truly amazing. There is audio guide that you can download on your phone for more information. The views from the top were stunning.

Pfaffenthal Panoramic Elevator

The Pfaffenthal Panoramic Elevator is 65 meters high and a free public elevator in Luxembourg that offers panoramic views of the Alzette River valley. The elevator runs every day from 5.45 in the morning until 1 o’ clock at night, perfect opportunities for those sunrise and sunset photos.

Luxembourg City Museum

It’s centrally located, with a mix of permanent and temporary exhibitions on every level, a good start to understand the history of the small country. It cost 5€ for adults but is free on Thursday between 6pm-8pm.

Questo Games

Walking tours can be expensive in Luxembourg, so our alternative was to buy a Questo Game. The idea is you go on a quest following clues and solving puzzles to discover the history and legends in Luxembourg. Fun right! We chose the ‘Romantic Luxembourg’ game. This game did not disappoint, it took us the most beautiful parts of Luxembourg City. We saw the Grand-Ducal Palace, Cathedral of Notre-Dame, Abbaye de Naumunster and the River Alzette and found Count Siegfried love Melusina.

Chemin De La Corniche (Balcony)

Referred to as the ‘most beautiful balcony in Europe’  built by the Spaniards and the French in the 17th century. The Chemin de la Corniche is a road built into the side of the mountain and offers stunning views of The Gurd and the Alzette Valley.

Chocolate House Nathalie Bonn

Located directly opposite the Grand Ducal Palace in Luxembourg, you can indulge in the finest Belgian and French chocolates whilst watching the change of the guard. This place does it very busy but its definitely worth it. There are three floors so grab your chocolate spoon take it upstairs and get table service.

Casemates Du Bock

This was the main thing I was looking forward to in Luxembourg. Built by the Austrians in the 18th Century, the Bock Casemates is a subterranean defence system made up of miles of tunnels and is today one of the most important visitor sites in Luxembourg, but unfortunately not for us as it was temporarily closed.
